Teaching Philosophy
My vision as an educator is to provide my students with the knowledge and skills it takes to be reflective, analytical and critical thinkers. My goal is to insure that my students are resourceful, creative and motivated lifelong learners. I will do this by providing an environment that fosters independent thinking with an emphasis on problem solving, dynamic learning and respect for alternative viewpoints and ideas. As technology grows, I want my students to grow with said technology but still be able to function in a world that values critical thinking above the ability to push a few buttons. Accomplishing this vision will require that I be proficient in content knowledge, technology and current research.
Qualities:
The classroom teacher must possess several qualities in order to be an effective educator. The qualities of an effective teacher are as follows: the teacher must be engaging, have great classroom management strategies, have high expectations for their class, and have a thorough knowledge of content. However, the most important quality any teacher can have is their passion for the children and helping them learn.
The greatest teachers are those that are able to grab a young person’s attention and hold it throughout a lesson. If a teacher loses a student’s attention for any length of time, that student may very well demonstrate a poor grasp of the content. It is imperative for teachers to engage their students and start the students on the road to problem solving. The more engaged a student in learning, the more knowledge that student is able to retain and recall when needed.
Teachers must maintain classroom management at all times. Moving lesson plans along and keeping to schedules will propagate an atmosphere of distraction-free learning for the students. Without a structured learning environment, chaos would insinuate itself into the classroom, robbing the students of valuable learning opportunities.
Having low expectations of their students is an unacceptable trait of any teacher. As an educator, one must always expect the best from their students so as to set a solid example for later in life when the student(s) reach adulthood. When students have a goal to reach for, they will invariably give their best effort to attain that goal. If the bar is set too low, students may never reach their true potential as scholars.
Teachers must be proficient in the material they teach. If a teacher is unable to grasp the content of a lesson, it becomes exponentially more difficult to teach that material to students. Having a solid knowledge base to draw upon will allow teachers to expand their teaching abilities, therefore accommodating the varying learning styles of their students.
Teachers must be passionate about what they do. Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world, if not the most important. They are tasked with shaping and molding and the minds of the future. If you are not passionate about what you do, you are destines to fail. It is most important that teachers love what they do and strive to portray that passion every single day, no matter how difficult things may become. Students, especially young students, will feed off of that passion and strive to better themselves in the eyes of their teachers when they see how important learning is to them.
Skills:
There are several skills that a teacher must have in order to be effective in the classroom. Some of those skills are as follows: the teacher must inspire trust and confidence, be motivating, and be understanding to the student’s educational and emotional needs. Teachers must also be dependable, organized, patient, and creative while communicating and working cooperatively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
As stated previously, teachers must be able to engage their students. The easiest way to insure that this happens is to be trustworthy and confident in what they are teaching. When students trust their teachers, the students are more apt to pay attention and learn the material. Having confidence in the material enables the teacher and students to have meaningful and open dialogue over the material which increases the student’s learning.
Motivating young minds can be a daunting task. However, when a student is motivated to learn, they are able to retain more of the lesson plan for future reference. Positive reinforcement is a great motivating tool. Something as simple as a pat on the back or a word of praise may be motivation enough for some students. For others, a teacher may be required to go beyond the norms and institute a reward system for reaching certain goals in the classroom.
No two students are exactly alike. Understanding the educational and emotional needs of a classroom full of diverse students is paramount to providing a level learning atmosphere for all the students. Some students require more hands-on teaching while others “get it” the first time the material is presented. Some students will never need to be told that they have done a great job on an assignment, while others are in constant need of emotional support. Teachers must be accepting of all of their students many needs and still provide a positive learning environment that fits in with those diverse needs.
My vision as an educator is bold and profound. I do believe that I must provide my students with the skills they will need to be positive members of society. I will provide my students with the ability to be resourceful, creative and critical thinkers. I want all of my students to be lifelong learners and to never lose that desire to gain more knowledge. Being proficient in content knowledge and keeping up with the latest technology and research has to offer are traits I will exhibit throughout my teaching career. The one thing that will allow me to achieve my vision is my passion for children and my desire to teach.
